prosthodontics

Prosthodontics is a specialised field of dentistry concerned with the restoration of worn, damaged or lost teeth by means of crowns, bridges, veneers, implants or dentures or any combination of these.

Teeth can wear due to any number of causes, such as grinding at night or imperfect alignment of the jaw. Teeth can also be lost through accidental trauma, infection or poor gum health. Rebuilding or replacing missing teeth is functionally important in terms of chewing, speaking clearly and maintaining good jaw health.

The skill set of a specialist prosthodontist ranges from single tooth management through to full arch rehabilitations and Teeth in 3 days™. They often work in conjunction with specialists in the related fields of periodontics and oral & maxillofacial surgery, a particularly effective collaboration when all of these clinicians work seamlessly under one roof as they do at our network partner practice, Collins Street Specialist Centre.

While it is possible for general dentists to carry out prosthodontic treatments, in complex cases we recommend specialist care to make absolutely sure quality of outcome is not compromised. To register with the Dental Board of Australia as a specialist, prosthodontists in Australia must have the same degree as a general dentist, plus a masters degree in prosthodontics (a further three to four years study).

When choosing a specialist, your decision should be based on three important factors:

  • the qualifications and experience of the treating clinician
  • local availability, contributing to continuity of care
  • compatibility of materials used.

At Core Dental Group, our prosthodontists are suitably qualified and experienced, work in seamless collaboration with our general dentists, periodontists and oral & maxillofacial surgeons, and use mutually compatible materials.  You will also benefit from our partnership with Collins Street Specialist Centre which, with a full range of qualified and experienced specialists, is a valuable source of knowledge and expertise which our team can call on.
