Oral & maxillofacial surgery is a specialised field of dentistry in which a wide range of oral conditions, trauma and diseases are diagnosed and treated. These include implant dentistry, bone grafting, orthognathic (jaw) surgery and complex wisdom teeth management.

To be successful, all of these treatments must be carried out by a highly qualified and experienced specialist practitioner.

Who can practise in this field?

It was once common for a general dentist to perform wisdom teeth extractions if the procedure was expected to be straightforward. However, many dentists will refer you to a registered specialist oral & maxillofacial surgeon for wisdom tooth treatment, especially if you request a general aesthetic or if your extractions are expected to be complex.

A general dentist has education and training of 4 to 5 years. By contrast, a specialist oral & maxillofacial surgeon has a 5-year honours degree in general dentistry, a 6-year university degree in medicine and surgery, and several further years of hospital-based surgical and medical training.

In the medical degree and training they study and practise the whole gamut of human health and medicine, including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and the nervous system. Typically they will also have completed fellowship examinations through the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

In Australia, only dentists who have completed the additional medical degree and training can become a Dental Board–registered specialist oral & maxillofacial surgeon, as listed on the website of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
