Periodontics is a specialised field of dentistry concerned with the treatment of structures surrounding and supporting the teeth, particularly the gums.

Gum disease (periodontitis) is chronic infection that causes deterioration of the gums and underlying bone that supports your teeth; symptoms include soreness, swelling or bleeding gums. Treatment is important to prevent unsightly receding gums, sensitivity and ultimately tooth loss.

Periodontists spend the majority of their time treating gum disease, performing gum surgery (such as gum lifts), performing bone grafting surgery and placing dental implants.

While it is possible for dental hygienists and general dentists to treat gum disease and for general dentists to perform gum surgery and place implants, in complex cases we recommend specialist care to make absolutely sure quality of outcome is not compromised.

To register with the Dental Board of Australia as a specialist, a periodontist in Australia must have the same degree as a general dentist, plus a masters degree in periodontics (a further three to four years study).

When choosing a specialist, your decision should be based on three important factors:

  • the qualifications and experience of the treating clinician
  • local availability, contributing to continuity of care
  • compatibility of materials used.

At Core Dental Group, our periodontists are suitably qualified and experienced, work in seamless collaboration with our dental hygienists, our general dentists and our oral &  maxillofacial surgeons in particularly complex cases, and use mutually compatible materials.

In more complex cases, your dentist may choose to refer you to the appropriate specialist. You can benefit from our partnership with Collins Street Specialist Centre in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, which is your direct link to a full range of qualified and experienced specialists registered with the Dental Board of Australia. Your records can remain with Core Dental Group and we can organise all follow-ups (including inter-disciplinary referrals if needed).
