Emergency Dental Care Across Melbourne: How Core Dental’s Group Model Helps

Dental emergencies don’t wait for convenient moments. A cracked tooth on a Friday afternoon, a lost crown the morning of an important meeting, sudden and severe toothache with no obvious cause, a knocked-out tooth from a sporting incident — these things happen, and when they do, the last thing you need is to spend an afternoon calling practices only to be told the next available appointment is in two weeks.

This is one of the areas where being part of a connected group of practices genuinely changes the experience for patients. At Core Dental, with seven locations across Melbourne (and two more opening in 2026), we have more capacity, more flexibility, and more ability to find a solution quickly than any single practice operating alone.

The reality of emergency availability

Any single dental practice, no matter how well-run, has a finite number of appointment slots each day. If they’re full — and in the middle of the week, most good practices are — a patient in pain has no good options: wait for a cancellation, try another practice, or present to a hospital emergency department (where dental care is limited and waits are long).

At Core Dental, we manage emergency availability across the group. If your usual location is fully booked and you’re in pain, we can check availability at our other locations in real time and get you into whichever one can see you soonest. All your records are accessible through CareStack, our shared patient management system — so whichever Core Dental practice you walk into, the treating clinician can see your full dental history, current medications, previous treatment notes, and any existing restorations. You’re not starting from scratch with a stranger. You’re walking into a different room of the same practice.

This is not a minor convenience. For a patient in significant pain, being told “we can see you this afternoon at our Craigieburn location” instead of “we’re sorry, we can’t help you for two weeks” is a completely different experience — and in genuine emergencies, it can make a real difference to outcomes.

What counts as a dental emergency?

It’s worth being clear about what warrants urgent attention, because patients sometimes hesitate to call, not wanting to make a fuss.

A knocked-out adult tooth is a genuine time-sensitive emergency. If the tooth is handled correctly and reimplanted (or kept in milk) within about 30-60 minutes, there’s a real chance of saving it. After that window, the likelihood of successful reimplantation drops significantly. If this happens, call us immediately and come in as fast as possible.

Severe toothache — especially the kind that wakes you at night, that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter pain relief, or that comes with swelling — needs same-day attention. This level of pain typically indicates either an abscess (a bacterial infection that can spread) or significant nerve involvement. Neither of these improves without intervention.

A dental abscess with visible swelling in the jaw or face is particularly urgent. In rare cases, dental infections can spread to other areas and become medically serious. This is not a situation to manage with painkillers and hope — it needs to be seen promptly.

Lost or broken crowns, veneers, or dental appliances are generally less urgent but still benefit from timely attention. A broken crown can leave the underlying tooth vulnerable to further damage, and most patients aren’t comfortable functioning without it. These can usually be booked within a day or two rather than requiring same-day emergency priority.

Dental trauma — cracked teeth, loosened teeth, injuries to the mouth and gums — needs assessment as soon as possible. Some injuries look minor but involve the root or surrounding bone; others that look alarming are more superficial. Getting it properly assessed quickly leads to better outcomes.

Extended hours, including Saturdays

Core Dental locations offer extended hours, including Saturday appointments, across the group. This matters because dental emergencies respect no schedule, and many working people simply cannot take time off mid-week to address dental pain.

Saturday availability means that even for non-critical situations that still need prompt attention — a cracked tooth, a painful wisdom tooth, a broken appliance — there’s a realistic pathway to getting seen without disrupting work.

If you’re unsure whether you need urgent care or can wait until a regular appointment, call us. Our reception team can help you triage the situation, give you some guidance on managing pain or protecting an injured tooth in the meantime, and book you at the soonest available slot across the group.

Existing patients and new patients

Emergency care is available to both existing Core Dental patients and new patients who haven’t seen us before.

If you’re an existing patient, your records are already in our system — wherever you present, we have your history.

If you’re new to Core Dental, we’ll take the time to understand your background, take any necessary imaging, and get you the care you need.

We do ask that patients experiencing a dental emergency call ahead rather than simply walking in where possible — not because we want to be bureaucratic about it, but because giving us a few minutes’ notice allows us to prepare the appropriate equipment and clinician for your situation, which means faster and better care once you arrive.

How the group model changes emergency care

A single-location practice, however excellent, can only do what its physical capacity allows. When it’s full, it’s full.

The Core Dental group model creates a genuine network of options — different locations, different clinicians, different appointment availability — all operating on shared systems with shared records.

For a patient in pain or distress, knowing that there is a pathway — that someone in the group can see you today — is enormously reassuring. We’ve had patients who came to us originally because they couldn’t get an appointment anywhere else when something went wrong, and who have been Core Dental patients ever since because of how that first experience went.

That’s the kind of reliability we aim to provide. Not just for routine care, but when things go wrong at inconvenient moments — which is exactly when the quality of your dental care team matters most.

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency

Call the Core Dental location nearest to you and tell us what’s happening. If that location is full, we’ll check across the group for the earliest available appointment. We’ll also give you practical advice for managing the situation while you wait. If you’re in severe pain or have facial swelling, we’ll do everything possible to see you the same day.

Don’t suffer through it
